أَلِفٌ أَرْنَب، يَجْرِي يَلْعَب

Alifun arnab, yajree yal‘ab

Alif is for rabbit, who runs and plays

يَأْكُلُ جَزَرَاً كَي لَا يَتْعَب

ya’kulu jazaran kay la yat‘ab

he eats carrots so he does not get tired

بَاءٌ بَطَّة، نَطَّت نَطَّة

Baa’un baṭṭah, naṭṭat naṭṭah

Baa’ is for a duck that jumped once

وَقَعَت، ضَحِكَت مِنْهَا القِطَّة

waqa‘at ḍaḥikat minha alqiṭṭah

She fell down and the cat laughed at her

تَاءٌ تَاج، فَوْقَ الرَّاس

Taa’un taaj, fawqa arraas

Taa’ is for a crown on the head

فِيهِ الذَّهَبُ وفِيهِ المَاس

feehi athahabu wa feehi almaas

it has gold and diamonds

ثَاءٌ ثَعْلَب، صَادَ دَجَاجَة

Thaa’un tha‘lab, ṣaada dajaajah

Thaa’ is for a fox who caught a chicken

هو مَاكِر، وَقَتَ الحَاجَة

huwa maakir waqta alḥaajah

he is sly when needed

جيمٌ جَمَلٌ فِي الصَّحَرَاء

Jeemun jamalun fi aṣṣaḥaraa’

Jeem is for a camel in the desert

مِثْلَ سَفِينَة فَوْقَ المَاء

mithla safeenah fawqa almaa’

like a ship on the water

حَاءٌ حَجٌ أَسْمَى رَغْبَة

Ḥaa’un ḥajjun asmaa raghbah

Ḥaa’ is for Ḥajj, the best desire

فِيهِ طَوَافٌ حَوْلَ الكَعْبَة

feehi ṭawaafun ḥawla alka‘bah

in which we do ṭawaaf around the ka‘bah

خَاءٌ خُبْزٌ عِنْدَ البَائِع

Khaa’un khubzun ‘inda albaa’i‘

Khaa’ is for bread at the vendor

لَا يَأْكُلُهُ إِلّا الجَائِع

laa ya’kuluhu illa aljaa’i‘

No one eats it except the hungry

دَالٌ دِيك، حَسَنُ الصَّوْت

Daalun deek, ḥasanu aṣawt

Daal is for rooster that has a good voice

قَامَ يُؤَذِّنُ فَوْقَ البَيْت

qaama yu’athinu fawqa albayt

it got up to make athaan on the rooftop

ذَالٌ ذِئْبٌ وَحْشٌ صَلْبٌ

Thalun thi’bun, waḥshun ṣalbun

Thaal is for a wolf, a tough monster

لَا يُرْهِبُهُ إِلّا الكَلْب

la yurhibuhu illaa alkalb

nothing scares him away but the dog

رَاءٌ رَجُلٌ عَرِفَ الدِّين

Raa’un rajulun, ‘arafa addeen

Raa’ is for a man who knew his religion

فَهُوَ صَدُوقٌ وَهُوَ أَمِين

fahuwa ṣadooqun wa huwa ameen

so he is honest and trustworthy

زَايٌ زَهْرَة، أَصْفَرُ أَحْمَر

 Zaayun zahrah, aṣfaru aḥmar

Zaay is for a flower, yellow and red

هِيَ بِعَيْنِي أَحْلَى مَنْظَر

hiya bi‘aynee aḥla manẓar

in my eyes it is the best sight

 سِينٌ سَاعَة تَحْفَظُ وَقْتِي

Seenun saa‘ah, taḥfaẓu waqtee

Seen is for a clock that keeps the time

فِي مَدْرَسَتِي أَو فِي بَيْتِي

fee madrasatee aw fee baytee

at my school or at my home

شِينٌ شَمْس، صُنْعُ قَدِير

Sheenun shams, ṣun‘u qadeer

Sheen is for the sun, a creation of God

فِيهَا الدِّفْءُ وَفِيهَا النُّور

feeha addif’u wa feeha annoor

in it we find warmth and light

صَادٌ صَائِد، أَلْقَى الشَّبَكَة

Ṣaadun ṣaa’id, alqaa ashabakah

Ṣaad is for a fisherman who threw his net

بَعْدَ قَلِيٍل صَادَ سَمَكَة

ba‘da qaleelin ṣaada samakah

after a while he caught a fish

ضَادٌ ضَابِط، يَحْمِي وَطَنِي

Ḍaadun ḍaabiṭ, yaḥmee waṭanee

Ḍaad is for an officer who protects my country

يحفظُ أَمْنِي، يَرْعَى سَكَنِي

yaḥfaẓu amnee yar‘aa sakanee

keeps my safety, and looks after my home

طَاءٌ طِفْلٌ، أَجْمَلَ طِفْلٍ

Ṭaa’un ṭiflun, ajmalu ṭiflin

Ṭaa’ is for a child, the most beautiful one

فَهُوَ نَظِيفٌ حَسَنُ الشَّكْل

fahuwa naẓeefun ḥasanu ashakli

who is clean and is good looking

ظَاءٌ ظُفْرٌ نَظَّفْنَاه

Ẓaa’un ẓufrun naẓafnaah

Ẓaa’ is for a fingernail that we cleaned

طَالَ قَلِيلَاً فَقَصَصْنَاه

ṭaala qaleelan faqaṣaṣnaah

it grew a little bit longer, so we clipped it

عَيْنٌ عَينٌْ تَخْشَى الله

‘aynun ‘aynun takhshaa Allah

‘ayn is for an eye who fears God

تَشَهَدَ خَيْرَاً فِيهِ رِضَاه

tash-hadu khayran feehi riḍaah

it sees good things that please Him

غَيْنٌ غَار، غَارُ حِرَاء

Ghaynun ghaar, ghaaru Ḥiraa’

Ghayn is for a cave, the cave of Ḥiraa’

فِيهِ أُنْزِلَ القُرْآن

feehi ’unzila alqur’aan

in it the Qur’aan was revealed

فَاءٌ فِيل، ذُو أَنْيَاب

Faa’un feel, thoo anyaab,

Faa’ is for an elephant who has tusks

وَهُوَ صَدِيقٌ يَا أَصْحَاب

wa huwa ṣadeequn ya aṣḥaab

and he is a friend my friends

قَافٌ قَمَرٌ فِيهِ مَنَازِل

Qaafun qamarun, feehi manaazil

Qaaf is for the moon, which has phases

ومَوَاقِيتٌ تَهْدِي السَّائِل

wa mawaqeetun tahdee assaa’il

and timings that guide the one who asks

كَافٌ كَلْبٌ عَاشَ جِوَارِي

Kaafun kalbun, ‘aasha jiwaaree,

Kaaf is for a dog who lived beside me

يَحْرُسُ غَنَمِي، يَحْرُسُ دَارِي

yaḥrusu ghanamee, yaḥrusu daaree

he watches over my sheep and guards my house

لَامٌ لَحْمٌ يَنْمُو جِسْمِي

Laamun laḥmun yanmoo jismee

Laam is for  flesh that makes me grow

يَكْسُو عَظْمِي، فِيهِ أَسْمَى

yaksoo ‘aẓmee feehi asmaa

it covers my bones, in it I’m the highest (creation)

مِيمٌ مَسْجِد، بَيْتُ الله

Meemun masjid, baytu Allah

Meem is for a mosque, the house of God

فِيهِ أُؤَدِّي كُلَّ صَلَاة

feehi ’u’addee kulla ṣalaah

where I pray every prayer

نُونٌ نَهْرٌ، نَهْرُ النِّيل

Noonun nahrun, nahru anneel

Noon is for a river, the river Nile

وَهُوَ كَرِيمٌ غَيْرُ بَخِيل

wa huwa kareemun ghayru bakheel

it is generous and not stingy

هَاءٌ هَرَمٌ عَالِي القِمَّة

Haa’un haramun ‘aalee alqimmah

Haa’ is for a pyramid that has a high top

وَبِنَاؤُهُ رَمْزٌ لِلْهِمَّة

wa binaa’uhu ramzun lilhimmah

and building it is a sign of zeal

وَاوٌ وَجْهٌ لِلْإِنْسَان

Waawun wajhun lil’insaan

Waaw is for a human’s face

فِيهِ نُورٌ بِالْإِيمَان

feehi noorun bil’eemaan

that is enlightened with faith

يَاءٌ يَدٌ تَرْسِمُ زَهْرَة

Yaa’un yadun, tarsumu zahrah

Yaa’ is for a hand drawing a flower

تُبْدِعُ شَكْلَاً، تُظْهِرُ فِكْرَة

tubdi‘u shaklan tuẓhiru fikrah

creating a shape, or expressing an idea
